Benedictine Abbey to Marmoutier

The monastery of Marmoutier is regarded as the capital of the oldest congregation of saint-Benoît in France: Marmoutier is said to say great monastery. This Abbey has the founder saint Martin Archbishop of Tours; She wiped the ravages of the Normans in 854; She was in the custody of the Kings of France until Hugues Capet who gave it to saint Mayeul Abbot of Cluni.

Saint Mayeul restored the Abbey and then gave it to the Benedictines who formed from the congregation of Marmoutier, no dependencies of the Abbey of Cluni. Chopin said that the Kings of France qualified Abbots of the monastery against which he was defended by the Pope to the bishops to launch any excommunication. That is why that an Archbishop of Tours to excommunicate Godefroi Duke of Normandy and count of Anjou, this prince replied that he feared point his excommunication, because he was a Canon of saint Martin and monk of Marmoutier.

This monastery was one of those who created the congregation of the free, but reform there have been introduced by the Benedictines of the congregation of Saint-Maur, the meeting is made in 1637 to this same congregation who has done since rebuild the monastery with great magnificence.

To the South, on the rue du Couvent, cellars and attics of the Abbey and housing overlooking the rue Général Leclerc. These buildings are built in coating covered sandstone rubble; They include a basement and a floor (exceptionally two floors). Brands of Mason on several buildings: B, H, K, P, F, V, L.

Depending on the abbey buildings were almost entirely rebuilt under the abbatiate of Placide Schweighaeuser, elected in 1742. A walkway located at the South of the Church is the date 1750, the initials P. A. (Placide Abbot). They included the housing of the brothers and the Abbot North of the Church, the cellars (or wine coolers) and dependencies South. The logis of the Abbot and clerics formed a quadrangle, with a garden in the centre, this garden extending northward beyond the buildings.

South dependencies included cellars, agricultural warehouses (along the rue du Couvent) and housing.

To the East, outside the fortifications, a large farm called Ackerhof has retained a few old buildings.

All of the convent still exists, but it has suffered a lot of time: a fire in 1886 destroyed a wing North of the Church, partly rebuilt. most of the buildings were divided into housing, the completely redesigned Interior distribution, some are more inhabited (the current Town Hall was redesigned entiererement, with a staircase dating from 1997). The best preserved buildings are studied individually.
