Dordogne

History

The department was creates with the French Revolution, on March 4, 1790 pursuant to the law of December 22, 1789, on part of the old province of Perigord.

In 1793, the communes of Boisseuilh, Coubjours, Genis, Payzac, Saint-Cyr-the-Champagnes, Saint-Mesmin, Salagnac, Savignac, Saint-Sorts and Teillots are detachees department of Correze to be joined together in the Dordogne.

In 1819, the commune of Bonrepos is withdrawn department and amalgamates with Souillac in the Batch.

Geography

The Dordogne, 3rd French department by its surface, fact part of the Aquitaine region. It is also with 45 % of its territory timbers, the 3rd forest department of France.

It is bordering on the departments of High-Vienna, Correze, the Batch, Lot-et-Garonne, of the Gironde, of the Charente-Maritime and Charente.
