Perigueux

It is said that P?rigueux east one of the oldest cities of Gaules. This assertion, printed, repetee each day, is accredited, and passes today for an undeniable truth. Among the enthusiastic ones of marvellous, the ones allot the origin of this city has Japhet, which would be the founder. They believe to find of it the proof in a popular tradition which attaches the name of the son of Noah to the remainders of a bridge thrown on It at the same place which separate the garden of Guinguette of the walls of the slaughter-house. They suppose that Japhet built this bridge, without thinking that this saint character, infinitely distant from our regions, had probably not made if long voyage for a work if not very important. The others give for author to the town of P?rigueux certain Petragorius, which they say to being the son of Tygerius, king d' Egypte. The latter have the merit of moderation at least; because, according to them, P?rigueux would have risen only after the ruin of Troye. The enlightened men that a vain exaltation does not dominate claim, on the contrary, that this city is modern, and that, similar to the generations which follow one another, its houses and their Masters were very often renew. Or is, indeed, the Vesone antique of the Celts? In the small valley of Campniac, on left bank of It, between the two slopes of the slopes of Boissiere and of Chip-Ox.

It is in this place that the savans place it; but that one is transported there, one will see there nothing any more, not same a hut. Eh! what imports the fibules, the amulets, the rings, the medals, the armours of arrows or darts, the shards and other ustensils that one unearths there! All these objects are only as many witnesses who attest his destruction. Will one seek second Vesone in this plain which the river sprinkles since Chip-Ox to the feet of the slope of Beaupuy? This city extended in length, of the East in the occident, from the slaughter-house to the bridge of Toulon, and occupied in width, of the south to north, almost all the plain; but the larger this city was, the less one sees it today. What one shows us with insurance the site of the municipal house, which one makes leave ground some pave, some ancient foundations, that still all that proves?

That Vesone is not any more. The ISCED, that the winners of the world honorerent title of majestic, also disappeared, and of his imposing size hardly one collects some remains that we vainly endeavour to preserve. What became the city of Petrocoriens, which, in the VII E century, was appelee for the first P?rigueux time?? It does not exist any more.

The inhabitants of first Vesone, too being tighten in the small valley of Campniac, passerent the river to fix itself in the plain. They abandonnerent their cradle: this abandonment caused the loss of their city. The Romans, who, by ambition, appeared not very satisfied with their empire, from which the limits extended however, of the East in occident, since the Atlantic Ocean to the borders of Persia, and, from north in the south, from the Caucasus until the ends of Egypt towards Ethiopia, came to subject the Vesone news and to impose laws to him. Hordes of barbarians melted has their turn on the Roman empire, invaded it of all shares, and, like a torrent devastator, renverserent on their passage all the invaluable monuments. The Buckwheats, led by Abderame two or three centuries later, appeared has P?rigueux to multiply the ruins of them. Waiffre, wanting to support its revolt against Pip-the-In short, and having this city under its domination, made some shave the walls. The Norman ones exercerent there also their furies. The English, to avenge humiliation not to be recognized as Masters by Perigourdins, saccagerent their city, and the civil wars ended up reversing it and destroying it. Thus, more Vesone; it was remplacee by this fraction of P?rigueux which we call the ISCED.

The current city is modern. It owes its origin has a tomb: it is a death which gave him the life.

The plate which it occupies was not originally that a wood isolates or from piles, Christians deposerent with respect the mortal remains of the propagator of their faith. This sacring place became an object of veneration, of pilgrimage, that the enthusiasm of faithful wanted to honour with a manner particuliere: a vault there was set up. The guard was confiee has some recluses, of which the number increased imperceptibly. One built there then a monastery, aupres from which came to group many dwellings. The revolutions with their vicissitudes, the wars with misfortunes which they trail has their continuation, multiplierent these dwellings. Or to seek peace, if the asylum of died and the stay of the virtue can't get it? However the tomb of the apostle of Perigord was not an insuperable barrier. To guarantee itself against the aggressions of the men, those which wished peace appelerent almost the war. By raising an enclosing wall, they exciterent mistrust and provoquerent attacks. It was necessary to organize a capacity to direct defense. Establishment of the Puy-Saint-Face fighting against P?rigueux, wanting to treat with him power has power, disputing its prerogatives to him, and finally finishing by him charming its rights, same its name.

As, as one does not seek in this modern P?rigueux of the Celtic or Roman monuments; in vain it would be upset basic in roof, all the efforts would become useless: he would not leave a Gallic medal there. As for the Roman monuments, one would not discover there that rare remains of the old vault consacree have holy Front, and masks today under the monument which we will describe. Front, we will say a word of the saint whose this monument bears name etc

P?rigueux, capital of Perigord, and today chief town of the Dordogne, department form this old province and weak parts of the Limousin, Angoumois and of Saintonge, carries:

Mouths, has two money surmontees turns of a flower of gold lily.

The ancient remainders which still remain has P?rigueux, prove that the first foundation of one quotes on this site goes up has one time strong reculee. It does not appear doubtful that these remainders did not belong to old Vesuna of Gallic and the Romans, ruinee by the barbarians under Honorius. With this first quotes succeeded Petrocorii which took the name of the people of its territory. It is not far from its walls that Pepin gained over the Aquitanian ones, in 768, year of its death, the victory which joins together Perigord with the crown. P?rigueux enjoys a long time great privileges, among which one hoped that to beat currency. Disputee by the French and the English, this city remained definitively with the first under Charles V, and was, in 1575, one of the eight places of safety accordees to the huguenots.
