Abbey of the Holy Trinity and its college, French Heritage monument to Thiron gardais
The Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Thiron Gardais can boast of a rich and glorious past. Royal Abbey as early as 1122, it has ceased to base of Priories and abbeys girls in France and England. The wars of the end of the middle ages were correct in its power and the decline of the observance of the benedictine rule resulted in the installation, in 1629, of religious of the reformed order of Saint-Maur. They made the Abbey his land power and undertook vast transformations of the Conventual buildings. Under their rule, the Maurists founded a college which, although raised to the dignity of Royal military school in 1776, has never been more important that projects established in the 17th century suggest it. The Revolution put an end to the Abbey of Thiron: the monastic buildings and the college were then sold as national property. The college has been retained but the cloister and some common buildings have disappeared. However, the plans drawn up by the Maurists in the 17th century and the records at the National Archives as in the departmental Archives allow to trace the life of the Abbey and the provision of the missing buildings. The buildings still visible today are the tithe barn, the secular doctor's House, mill, bakery and a barn. Hydraulic schemes are still in place. These buildings are not exceptional architectural quality (House of rubble with settlements of angle), but they reflect however the disposition of an abbatial enclosure remained without major changes since the 18th century. On the other hand, the college building is a most careful composition and appears to have retained its interiors. Thus, the Abbey of Thiron Gardais enclosures can be easily rendered by archives and documents by the presence of buildings that remain, but also by the archaeological remains that could be updated during a search in the location of cloister and the choir of the Church.
