Château du Grand-Jardin et son parc

The castle of the Large-Garden, built about the middle of the sixteenth century, belongs entire to the architecture of the Rebirth, of which it offers a gracious specimen. One owes his foundation to the first duke of Own way, Claude of Lorraine, lord of Joinville, and, in the absence of positive evidence, a constant tradition would be enough to establish its origin.

Claude of Lorraine lived at the court of Fran?ois 1st, it had to draw there the taste of arts, whose noble characters are subject to always the generous influence, and, while the king of France, creating Chambord and Fontainebleau, supported with enthusiasm the development of an architectural revolution commencee by the artists of Italy, Claude of Lorraine, following the example monarch, raised in his baronnie a worthy country cottage to compete by the variety of the ornamentation, delicacy and finished details, with most sumptuous constructions of this time.

A vast enclosure and well cultivates surrounded the building: undoubtedly modest name that had taken and that still preserves after three centuries the dwelling seigneuriale. Little time before its death, the duke of Own way, if one believes his funeral oration of it, '' the heart reinforces against the mortelz assaulx, alloit and venoit by its room and sometimes iusques have its large iardin, or all the people was assembled in his grand' room the day of Dominica in impassions; and illec was faicte preaching after disner, or it assisted and resiouyt its people by his presence. ''

Above a door, outside, one finds serious the year 1546; on the pilasters one reads the currencies: All For One - and not puses, which were those of the house of Own way.

Lomyre says of the history of this building :
