Gallo-Roman sanctuary, French Heritage monument to Villards d heria
It was the principal sanctuary of Sequanes which populated the Jura At the time Gallo-Roman. It broke up into a sanctuary of bottom, around the Bridge of the Arches, and of a sanctuary top.
It is today one of the major Gallo-Roman sites of Franche-Comt?. One can observe vestiges of temples still there (part of the bases of the farm of the lake is consisted the foundations of a large rectangular temple, has proximity, traces of a circular temple), of a monumental fountain, swimming pools and trunks has offerings. The site was divided in three parts:
- a zone sacree
- an intermediate place of rest and gathering of the pilgrims
- a balneal whole in the south along Heria
On the circumference of the lake, one notes the presence of important architectural blocks, constituting monumental units sometimes:
- arc collapses and rolls on the slope,
- level of sawmill perhaps re-using an ancient base.
The most strange assumptions were put forth on this sanctuary: it would have been the place of rites druidic, the hermitage of Romain saint, even that of the Carloman monk, uncle de Charlemagne, or more whimsical still - gold mines or one quotes Egyptian.
In fact, one does not know large-thing of the practical worship has Villars d' Heria.
Certain sources mention excavations financed by Louis XIV in 1698.
The excavations dirigees by L. Lerat, on the site of the Bridge of the Arches, following an intervention of rescue due to the destruction occasionnees by work of water conveyance of the Agricultural engineering, from 1958, allowed, during a score of years, to release on more than 2800 m ? a vast site sacring constitutes of a sanctuary (temple, place dallee, basin with the emergence of a source, monumental staircase, platform with the furnace bridges, connect by a trapezoidal place has a double balneal unit sacring borders of galleries).
Bellonne could be reported has a Latin divinity guerriere, Bellona, one of the rare goddesses that the Gallo-Roman pamteon accomodated like marries of a Gallic divinity romanisee: Ciccolluis March.
This couple was honours in a sanctuary has Villards d' Heria around a sacree source, near the small lake of Cave, between Saint-Claude and Moirans-in-Mountain.
