Church of Villerest

Villerest (Villaretum and Villeretum in the 12th century and at the beginning of the 13th century, Velvet in the 13th century, Villarez Villares, Villareis and Villeretz in the 14th and 15th century, and finally Villeret and Villerest).

This ancient small stronghold is situated on a hill high on the left bank of the Loire and nearly to peak on the river. She commanded, with the much less important fortress of Vernay, which makes it vis-à-vis on the other side, the output of the parade of rocks. The municipality of Villerest has been meeting, in 1824, one very close to Saint-Sulpice, whose town had lost all importance and including the Church, very small, increasingly isolated, was abandoned at about the same date.

Indeterminate and Gallic times

Two stations or to the porch and in the back-of Ane prehistoric workshops, have made many exploded and carved Flint, some tools in Crystal, and fragments of reindeer antlers. Nothing from the Neolithic period.

To the South of the commune, on a promontory on the left bank of gout Lourdon, near its mouth in the Loire, still exist the debris of a rampart vitrified, said Castle-brûlé, who was probably a Dunum, or small fortified outpost satellite advanced of the Oppidum of Joeuvres, opposite the hotel on the other side of the river.

The speaker appears to have been roughly quadrangular, and it is on its southern front that are fragments of a long wall of about 90 metres on 1 meter height 50 and 5 wide, including scree. This wall, not equipped with ditches, consisted of welded boulders to the other by the action of fire. These porphyry granite stones have the appearance of slag and are more or less eroded indoors. They are coated with a glaze of whitish colored glass and green dark, and by this surface melt are glued to each other. It knows today that this vitrification shows no serious difficulty and requires a temperature relatively low and easy to get with pyres of willing wood.

The presence of a few Flint, only remnants of civilization met near this rampart, found a contemporary prehistoric origin of the stone age. It was suggested even to see a workshop of flint? It seems more expedient to date of a time shortly before the conquest. The glazed walls indeed were part of the defensive system of the Gauls, as well as the walls with foundation stones and beams; their use is is continued after the conquest (strong glazed Creuse), but until the time possibly Franque (mound of the Tower-Saint-Austrille and Machézal).

As has been said about Roanne, Villerest territory was crossed southwestern Northeast by the main Roman road from Rodumna to Aquae Segetae (lenght).

Middle ages and modern times

The road driving villerest in Roanne, section leading villerest in Roanne, the ancient track section, is designated in the 15th century under the name of great rail road.

Church

The Church, oriented, dedicated to saint Priest, is a construction of three different ages. Of the primitive edifice, the plan gave a Latin cross and its architectural details dating from the last years of the 12th century, it remains that apse, choir and the transept with the Tower planted on the crossroads of the naves. The semicircular apse, vaulted apse, is lace three small lancets Lancet Windows very narrow and very slim, that recall the elegant berries of the commandery of Verrières.

Despite the thickness of the wall and thanks to very wide splays, they illuminate not only the apse, but the chorus that precedes and is vaulted a broken cradle between two timbers warheads. Similarly, vaulted transept has two chapels of the apse, lateral to the chorus. Point of capitals. And arcs of the archivolts and the timbers are worn on simple mouldings, chamfered to Romanesque fashion.

The square Tower of the Bell Tower is based on the huge pillars of the crossroads. Powerful and massive, it ended in flat roof to four crawling under which opened small rectangular bays.

This Bell Tower forézien, very simple and severe, comes to be awkwardly turned by a Coronation of four small pediments, pierced by oculus, that breaking the height lines, give the ridiculous aspect of a Chinese pagoda.

At a time that can be specified, the single nave of this early church was rebuilt to the transept. Was built the current nave which the vault edge on square between fabric full hanger, is less high than the birthplace of the ancient crossroads. It opens the low side by four very broad, very low arches whose archivolts high warheads would seem to belong water 14th century and whose pillars are the huge massive with irregular section. The collateral two are modern. Rebuilding had to ground the expansion of the Church, because their width beyond the arms of the transept, which could therefore be opened only by very unsightly oblique berries. Outside, raised the apse walls are more traces of the Romanesque cornice, and in a niche near the ground, on the left side of the Church is a statue in stone of a Christ in the courtroom, in the style of the 16th century. It is placed on a stamped base bearing badge of... to three hearts of..., two in Chief and one in base.
