The department of Loiret is a French department locates has a hundred kilometers in the south of Paris. INSEE and the Post office allot code 45 to him.

History

The department was creates with the French Revolution, on March 4, 1790 pursuant to the law of December 22, 1789, starting from part of the province of Orleanais.

It directly draws its name from the river Loiret, a resurgence of the Loire. This phenomenon is at the origin of the name of a recent district of Orleans, Orleans-the-Source.

This choice of denomination points out that, slightly later, which led to the name of the department of Vaucluse, although the respective hydrological causes are not comparable at all, the only common point being the existence of a powerful source.

Geography

The department of Loiret belongs, with the Loir-et-Cher and the Eure-et-Loir, with the old historical province of Orleanais. It is today one of the departments of the Centre area.

It is bordering on the departments of the Essonne, Seine-et-Marne, Yonne, of Nievre, of Expensive, of Loir-et-Cher and Eure-et-Loir.

It includes/understands four urban surfaces: Gien, Montargis, Orleans and Pithiviers.
