Castle of Mez-le-Maréchal, French Heritage monument to Dordives
Above the way which one still calls, in the country, way of Cesar, that which leads to the old bridge, has 200 bills of quantities of the department of Seine-and Marne and has two kilometers on the right village of Dordives, one sees in the middle of a wild rabbit, and on a light height, an old strong castle, the most picturesque aspect. It belonged to the Ruau countess, which had Egreville-the-City, and today this curious dwelling is occupied by a farmer of the name of Louvet.
This fortress, built out of small apparatus extremely well preserves, entouree broad pits furnished with the dimension of the south of their contrescarpe, provided with a good wall with four turns placees with the four corners, and of a keep of round form, only dimension of north is accessible. One penetrates there by a joiie carries flanquee of two turrets which ordered a drawbridge.
This curious construction, which must belong to XIIe or XIIIe century, recalls a little by its provision, but in more modest proportions, the castle of Vincennes, of which it with the less imposing aspect, though also seigneurial.
We can nothing say. its history: it is unknown for us; but if the artists want to take, in fact castles the Middle Ages, which the most charming models of the genre can show them, they do not have which this curious manor has to visit.
A large court, of equilaterale form, bornee by the fortifications which surround it completely, contains dimension of the west the open keep and gives up, but of a strong beautiful aspect, then an antique remains dimension of the south, which is used today as farm building, and to which adossee is a terrace or stage of staircase supported by an arcade.
As for the residence of Mr. Louvet, it is more modern than other constructions, and is appuyee against the wall of the dimension of the east, following a kind of old barn. '' The pigeons and the others accustom farm are seizes the keep, and on paves this court, peaceful animals replace today the dispach riders bards of iron which one formerly exerted with the combat on his abandoned flagstones.
Apart from the pits, and a hundred step of the castle has, dimension of the west, one sees a vault which bears the name of Vault of the Castle. This small building, in which one said, on August 15 of each year, a mass who was followed of a festival of night, which festival has justifies for some time, has one says us, the abandonment of any religious ceremony, is outside very-simple; however, it is provided, in the part which looks at the castle, and which forms the apse, of two spurs which support the side walls of them, and of a main door in the part which faces the East.
Above this door, one sees an escutcheon coarsely engraves on the stone, and which relates to a field linked, cut and endente on the edges, three stars as a chief. A stamp roasts profile and decorates lambrequins surmounts these weapons, which were to belong to the one of the former lords of Metz-the-Marshal.
