Church, French Heritage monument to St cirq lapopie

About the castle of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

This castle was located on a steep rock which has over one hundred metres of elevation and that juts into the Valley of the Lot, so that it can be attacked by one side. It was almost razed by order of Louis XI, because Raymond de Cardailhac chatelain took advantage against him in favour of the Duke of Berri in the war of the public weal. It was rebuilt under the reign of Charles VIII, who gave great favors to Raymond de Cardailhac, for the rigours he had suffered during the previous reign.

The land of St. - Cirq belonged to la maison de Cardailhac since 1229, since this year there Bertrand de Cardailhac, the same who commanded the second corps of the army of Montfort, paid homage to this land to Raymond count of Toulouse. One of his descendants, the name as Bertrand, received in 1395 the Castle and the land of St. - Cirq for part of his paternal rights and was the source of the barons de Cardailhac - St.Cirq. His son, Jean de Cardailhac, became Governor and Seneschal of the province of Quercy in 1450. This was the son of the latter that arma for the duc de Berri against Louis XI. He was punished by the devastation of his land of St. - Cirq, Cieurac, BH, Concots and Aujols. The son also bore the name of Raymond; He fought at the battle of St - Aubin for the Duke of Orléans, from Louis XII, and was appointed SÉNÉCHAL and Governor of the Quercy. Geoffroi de Cardailhac, who died childless, was the last of this branch.
