Church from Ste Enimie

Above the town and on the slope overlooking the right bank of the Tarn, is a Hermitage inhabited, but that is being maintained; the priests of the place will celebrate the divine office at certain times. It is believed generally that it is in this place that died sainte Enimie.

The monastery of nuns, founded in the 7th century, passed three centuries later to the Benedictine monks of the order of saint-Chaffre of le Puy. The deed of donation by the Bishop Etienne in was passed to Rome under Pope Agapit, in 951. In a book published in 1750 by the Benedictines of Occitania (Languedoc), we read that at that time the monastery of Sainte-Enimie remained in Gévaudan, also under the title of Abbey, but under that of Conventual Priory of the order of Saint Benedict, dependent on the Abbey of Saint-Chaffre.

There is still some remains of the old monastery; If this building goes back, as seems likely, at the time of its early Foundation, it would be one of these Merovingian constructs that are very rare today. It would therefore be inadequate she was preserved from complete destruction.

Before the revolution of 1789, the Church of Sainte-Enimie was a Priory, whose holder was a Deputy in the States of Gévaudan. He shared this prerogative with the dom of Aubrac, the prior of Langogne, Abbot of the Chambons and the Commander of Palhers. In addition, he enjoyed the right of appointment to the third dignity of the College chapter of Notre-Dame-de-Caree, Marvejols.
