Royal Abbey of Fontevraud
Abbey founded in 1099 by Robert of Arbrissel. The fontevriste order was the originality to be a mixed order, headed by an Abbess. From 1135 to 1793, 36 abbesses ruled Fontevraud, including more than half of royal blood. Napoleon made the Abbey a Central House. Prison until in 1963, the Abbey is then entrusted to the Ministry of cultural affairs which undertook its restoration. Inside the Abbey, four monasteries intermingle: Grand Moutier, St. Benedict, convent de la Madeleine and Saint-Lazare. The Abbey Church still houses recumbent of the Henri II Plantagenet, Richard Coeur de Lion, Eleanor of Aquitaine...
