Royal Abbey of Fontevraud

The Ministry of culture gives us the following instructions: Abbey founded in 1099 by Robert of Arbrissel. The fontevriste order was the originality to be a mixed order, headed by an Abbess.

From 1135 to 1793, 36 abbesses ruled Fontevraud, including more than half of royal blood. Napoleon made the Abbey a Central House. Prison until in 1963, the Abbey is then entrusted to the Ministry of cultural affairs which undertook its restoration. History of Fontevrault or Fontevraud

The order of Fontevraud, composed of convents of men and convents of women, was all full of the Abbess of Fontevraud, and was exempt from the jurisdiction of the ordinary. This singularity, which subjected men to the authority of a woman, was designed, in the spirit of its pious founder, Robert D'arbrissel, remember the tender had placed the beloved Apostle to the mother of the Savior.

After the death of Robert of Arbrissel, who, in addition to the convents of the vallon de Fontevraud, on the borders of the Anjou and Poitou, had yet established many monasteries in various locations, those of lodges, Chantenois, of the Encloitre of the unit, the Moor, Tucson in Poitou, Orsan in Berry, and Madeleine of Orléans, on the Loire, of Boubouthe Gasconiere Priory, convent of Cadouin, and finally Haute-Bruyère in the diocese of Chartres, of other convents of the order soon settled in Spain and England, and multiplied in France in all the provinces of the Kingdom. The House of God girls, founded in Paris by saint Louis, and reduced to two or three nuns, was given to the order of Fontevraud by Charles VIII, 1483, sounds the Government of Abbess Anne d ' Orléans, sister of Louis XII.

Among the many privileges that were granted to the order by the sovereign pontiffs, we noticed one of the year 1145, by which Eugène III liberates the religious of tests of boiling water and cold water, iron and others, ordering that they would be more obliged to justify their claim that through witnesses.

The religious of Fontevraud, first under the rule of St. Benedict, is nevertheless referred to as canons regular, and had embraced that of St. Augustine, when a reform, requested by Marie of Brittany, twenty-sixth Abbess, porta, in 1459, some remedy to the disorder. But this attempt having point met the piety of the Abbess, she retired to the Abbey of la Madeleine d ' Orléans, to establish a more serious reform. Assisted by the religious of the orders of Saint-François, the Carthusians, and Celestine, she drew in the constitutions of Robert of Arbrissel in the rules of St. Benedict and Saint-Augustin, and formed a new rule, which, approved by Pope Sixtus IV in 1475, stood despite many resistances in all the houses of the order, under the Government of Anne of Orléans and Renée de Bourbon, 1475 and 1507. This last Abbess gave the example of the observation of the rule by making into the hands of Louis de Bourbon, Bishop of Avranches, in 1505, vow of closing. His authority shaken a few moments by the monks, who had forced her to submit to their monitoring despite the statutes of the order, was restored by decision of the great Council, in 1520, and confirmed by Pope Clement VII in 1523.

Retry again took place under the Government of Jeanne-Baptiste de Bonrbon-Lavedan, to establish a kind of independence towards the Abbess for the benefit of the religious of the order; But despite a bull of Urban VIII, the new rule and point came to execution, and arrest of Louis XIII, October 8, 1641, restores and confirmed the reform of 1475, approved by Sixtus IV, ordering that a composed factum by religious, and offensive to the order, was defaced.

H. Bouchitte.

It happened in use is envoyât in Fontevraud the daughters of France, for there be high in their youth. The Abbess belonged almost always by legitimate or illegitimate, ties to royal blood. Ms. de Pardaillan D'ANTIN, rear granddaughter of Madame de Montespan, who was in 1789 Abbess of Fontevraud, pulled this benefit more than 100,000 pounds of annuity. This rich and powerful Institute was divided into four provinces: France, Aquitaine, Auvergne, and Brittany. The first contained fifteen Priories, the second fourteen, the third 13, the fourth thirteen.

The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud is transformed since 1804 in a central jail. Five churches contained therein, it is more than a, the greatest of all, remarkable monument of the twelfth century. Are reported at the same time the construction of the Edward Tower, which rises again in the second courtyard in the middle of the modern buildings, with its blackened walls and its pyramidal mass. It was formerly, in popular belief, a sepulchral Chapel, placed in the middle of a cemetery. Four statues mutilated of Henri II, King of England, of Éléonore de Guyenne, wife of Richard the Lion and Elisabeth, wife of John Lackland, that is all that remains of the famous cemetery where slept the Plantagenets.

The village of Fontevraud is surrounded by Woods; It is populated by 1,500 individuals (NdW: 1867), is located 12 km from Saumur, and is part of the Maine-et-Loire.
