Marne

The department of the Marne is a French department belonging to the area Champagne-Ardenne, which owes its name in the Marne, river which sprinkles it. INSEE and the Post office allot code 51 to him.

History

The department was creates with the French Revolution, on March 4, 1790 pursuant to the law of December 22, 1789, starting from part of the Champagne province. The idea being that the inhabitants can join the chief town and return from there in 2 days (has horse), the department of the Marne east creates by cutting of Champagne in four departments: the Ardennes, the Marne, the Paddle and Haute-Marne. On February 17, 1800 (28 pluviose year VIII), the function of Prefect is creee. Middle-class man of Jessaint becomes the first prefect of the Marne, and will occupy this station during 38 years.
