Mayenne is a French department which owes its name with the river of the same name. INSEE and the Post office allot code 53 to him.
Mayenne is one of the 83 departments create in France on March 4, 1790 pursuant to the law of December 22, 1789. Two thirds north of the department correspond roughly to Low Maine, i.e. the western half of the old province of Maine. One the southern third of the department corresponds to High-Anjou or Mayenne angevine, i.e. the north of the old province of Anjou.
Mayenne belongs to the Pays area of the Loire. It is bordering on the departments of the English Channel, the Flowering ash, of the Sarthe, of Maine-et-Loire and Ille-et-Vilaine.
