Thionville

Pretty and strong city. Chief town of sub-prefecture. Place war of third class. County court. Company of agriculture. Communal college. 5,645 hab.

Thionville is known only since the O C century; it was then one of the rich person fields whom the kings of France lived to look after there the re-entry of their territorial incomes. Charlemagne was due to it in 805 two national councils. Two other councils were held there into 821 and 825, by Louis Debonnaire, which held to with it also a diet into 836, or Lothaire sent the principal lords of its court to treat its reconciliation with his/her father. After the extinction of the race carlovingienne, this city had particular lords, and passed then, under the domination of the counts de Luxernbourg. In 1443 it was assiegee without success by Philippe of Burgundy. Later it belonged successively to the dukes of Burgundy, to the house of Austria and to kings d' Espagne. The marshal of Vieuville and the duke of Own way assiegerent it and took it by storm on June 23, 1558, after an obstinate defense. The marshal of Strozzy lost the life there; one drove out the inhabitants of very old and any sex, and one sold their houses with the Residents of Metz which repopulated it. The following year, Thionville was returned has Philippe II, by the ashamed one deals with Cateau-Cambresis: one pointed out the middle-class men expel city, and one restores them in their residences. The marquis de Feuquieres attacked this city in 1637 with an army of 13,000 men, which was taillee in parts on June 7 under the walls of the place. The duke of Enghien, which later was the large Cop, took Thionville by capitulation in 1643, after three months of seat and thirty days of open trench. In 1792, that city was invested by the Austrians, and suffered a few hours from bombardment; it was bloquee narrowly in the two invasions of 1814 and 1815.

The fortifications of Thionville have a great development; seven has eight thousand men are necessary for their defense. These cuttings off if multiply, raised in various times, from Charles-Quint, belong has several systems which one has coordinate as much as that was possible. The body of the place is an irregular heptagon, with half-moons, counterguards and glasses; Vauban and Carmontaigne have there exhausts the resources of their Article.

Thionville is the second city of the department by its military importance and its population. The city and its fortifications occupy a perfectly plane surface; one enters there by three doors: those of Metz, Luxembourg and the Covered Bridge. The majority of the streets broad, but in general are irregularly bored. The houses are firmly built; some belong to XVIe century, time which on several buildings a date sculptee notes. The Moselle, broad of 130 bills of quantities, limits the city at midday; to go on Right Bank, one crosses it on a covered bridge which is far from deserving the reputation which he enjoys. The place of weapons is beautiful; three bodies of barracks occupy three dimensions of them; the fourth east occupies by the horse-gear of cavalry, looks at as one of most beautiful than there is in France.

Among the worthy public edifices to fix the attention, one quotes the parish church achevee in 1760, whose gate east decorates with four pilasters of Ionic order, a pediment, and surmounts by an attic; it has 26 bills of quantities of width on 21 bills of quantities height to the balustrade which separate the two turns, high has 30 bills of quantities above the ground. The interior presents a chorus in hemicycle, surrounds by pilasters, a nave and the collateral ones separated from each dimension by six columns of Ionic order, the whole barrel vault with intermediate arcs beams. One still notices has Thionville the barracks; the corn exchange; the theatre; the horse-gear; the college; the civil hospital. The governor lived before the revolution a vast extremely simple hotel, occupies today by the sub-prefecture, the court, the town hall and the barracks of gendarmerie; close to this building is a well maintained garden of botany.

While entering has Thionville, a foreigner is striking of the movement which reigns there; indeed, by the small surface assigned to the houses of the citizens, the population is extremely numerous there; the families of the people are entassees in narrow residences; a garrison of two regiments, one of infantry and the other of cavalry, increases this movement further.
