Samer

here a legend which interests the town of Samer (district of Boulogne-sur-Mer) and that I report such as the Malbrancq Father has it narree in his History of Morins (1639)

'' etc every year, the day of the Invention of the '' Holy-Cross '', 3rd day of may, that those of Samer celebrate with solemnity and procession in memory of the love which Saint Wulmer for the Cross had, two hinds came from the bottom of the drill of Sylviac (old name of Samer) to the door of the church of the Abbey of Samer, went then to the head of the procession, stopped when it was needed; such an extraordinary spectacle attracted has Samer a big competition of people which ran of all dimensions to see this procession.

After the ceremony, one saw these two animals going to the door of the church, having the head baissee on paves; one of them was turned over from there then in wood and the other remained in the abbey, or it was nourished during some time to become then the food of the poor. The following year, the hind which was retiree in the drill returned with another to attend the procession, after which it remained and his/her partner was turned over from there in wood. What lasted several centuries and would perhaps last still if the inhabitants of Samer had guard the bona fide and had not been too avid etc

Perhaps how the wars will have been the cause which these countries were live by foreigners who, being unaware of a so extraordinary miracle, will have concealed two hinds etc and in the continuation none appeared! etc of or one can conclude that the nickname of eaters of hinds, which was gives the inhabitants of Samer for such a black action towards these animals, must be rejete on the foreigners who invaded this country, since the natural ones of the place had had a particular care of it during several centuries etc ''

Today still Sameriens are call: Maqueux Ches of she-goats, in Artesian patois.
