Church Saint-NECTAIRE, French Heritage monument to St nectaire

History

Davanne, Alphonse (1824-1912)

We unfortunately do not have any historical information on the construction of the church. Its archaeological study seems to prove that it was high of only one jet between 1146 and 1178, at the time of the arrival of the monks of Chair-God who assurerent the parochial worship there entrusts has a prior until the day or, the council of Clermont having prohibited the monks from exerting functions curiales, the prior was replaces by a perpetual vicar names on the presentation of the abbots of Chair-God and assists priest-godsons.

It is known on the other hand, who it is into 1794 That the central bell-tower of the church was demolished, on the order of conventional Couthon, by a Limousin mason names Nuger, that the furnace bridge was breeze and the bells melted except for one only envoyee has Clermont with invaluable objects.

The church become a salpetre factory was to be Re-open only in 1804 after having received some repairs of fortune. It was definitively restauree in 1876 by the Bruyerre architect who, inter alia things, remade the bell-tower completely.

Foot-note: You will find on this page several engravings old attribuees has St Nectary. And a photograph, Ci of Davanne, judicious to above represent the church.

A detail however draws the attention with regard to the arrow. You will indeed see a simple stage of opening on these representations whereas the current church includes/understands two of them.

One could think that these representations go back to before the demolition from the bell-tower (1794) only Alphonse Davane (1824-1912) could not materially be to photograph them. The only logical conclusion is thus that the Bruyerre architect would have additions a level with the arrow which was not completely destroyed before the restoration of 1876 (period that davane could have photographed).

If such is the case, it is extremely probable which the Bruyerre architect is inspires by Saint-Austremoine of Issoire (for example) for this realization. Any information is the welcome (click on contact)

Description

Plan

The plan of this church is composed of a nave, by five spans whose first forms a hall or a narthex surmounts by a platform between two turns of frontage, common provision with much of churches of Auvergne and that 1 ' one finds for example has Our-Lady-of-Port, has Chamalieres, has Manglieu, in the church nave single of Royat, etc has the nave, flanquee the collateral ones, is followed of a transept on which open two absidioles semicircular. The chorus, precedes by a right span, east surrounds by a deambulatoire giving birth also has radiant three-vaults in hemicycle. A central bell-tower high on the cross-section of the transept.

Nave

The hall which forms the first span of the nave is the shape of three vessels separated by a beam with the arrises and formees from only one row of archstones like all the arcs of this church which, everywhere are naked there and in semicircular arch. These three vessels communicate with the nave by three arcades placees on piles barlongues cantonnees of four columns. They are covered with groined vaults ramenees to the cross-section by means of a transom which receives their repercussions ahead, of the imbedded columns supporting the beam. It there with artifice very characteristic of the processes auvergnats as Mr. of Ranquet has it several times notices, the trenchers of the capitals are hollow of a cavet like all those of the monument and some carry, delimit by nets, long rectangles, last memories of the Carolingian cartouches. Below, the baskets are variously decorees: several are covered sheets of water terminees by small hooks, on one of e1les of the foliages emergent like basket of basket making. Two others, very particular, are simply shaped of a series of mouldings superposees above the astragale; rods, bands, throats do not form projections the ones above the others. At first sight, this capital could pass to be a base renversee surmontee of a bearing. It of it is nothing, but it is about a rather strange party which consists has to place a capital thus moulding under a platform, because we have finds the same one in the narthex of Manglieu, Orcival, Moutier de Thiers, etc Enfin, the bases as all those of this church are cerclees of two tori overflowing one under the other and barges of nets.

In north, a staircase in continuous cradle, on which marks of sole-piece remain apparent goes up in the platform divisee in the same way in three covered vessels of groined vaults, divide by beams of which the angles alone install contain between them a central fur. The principal vessel is enlightened in the west by a window with naked splayings and it opens on the nave by a large arcade etresillonnee as the similar platforms of the area by a lintel surmounts by three small similar arcades resting on posts monoliths whose capitals are furnished with water sheets. The suction face of this arcade is itself reduces by two small bays. The sides of the platform are lit by a side opening and their opening on the nave presents a similar system of bracing has that which is close, with this difference which the arcade is subdivisee that in two secondary arcades and is not extradossee, because crawling them of the roof are opposed to it.

The four spans which make continuation in the nave are covered with a continuous cradle in semicircular arch. Let us recall, after Eugene Lefevre-Pontalis, who the absence of beams is constatee on the naves auvergnates only in the only churches of Chauriat, Ennezat, Saint-Amable of Riom, Mozac and in that we study. Under the cradle and without intermediate windows, the platforms are placees which open on the nave by bays geminees of which the arcs line are separated by columns monoliths. The platforms are voutees of a half-cradle in quadrant divides beams extradosses and which contrebute the central vessel. One wanted to support that this contrebutement nave by the half-cradle of the platforms was the principal distinctive mark of the churches auvergnates. It indeed is found has Notre-Dame of the Port, has Issoire, has Ennezat, has Orcival, has Saint-Amable of Riom, has Saint-Saturnin, with the church of Moutier de Thiers and there existed formerly in that of Mozac. But with the truth this very logical and very skilful system, meets elsewhere, as Eugene Lefevre-Pontalis 1 ' many times pointed out. Architects experienced do not have fears to employ it in the most various areas which did not have any report/ratio of influence with Auvergne, as the churches of Saint-Etienne of Caen prove it; of Beaulieu (Correze), of Saint-Sernin of Toulouse, of Conch-in-Rouergue, as formerly that of Saint-Martial of Limoges proved it. One finds it same abroad as well in the cathedral of Gloucester as in that of Santiago de Compostelle.

Sides

Each span of the sides, delimitee by beams is covered groined vaults from which the compartments come to be melted with the large arcades which do not make not covered on them, according to a very special process has 1 ' Auvergne and which we raised has Notre-Dame of the Port, Chauriat has, has Ennezat, has Issoire, has Saint-Nectaire, and by exception Saint-Savin in Vienna has. But on the contrary this provision was not observee has Orcival. Against the wall, the repercussion of the vaults is insured by transoms prolonging the trenchers of columns imbedded according to the process which we raised in the platforms of the frontage and which we still can Signaler as having been employed Orcival has, Saint-Saturnin has, has Issoire, has Ennezat, but which by exception was not it has Manglieu. Here, some capitals of the imbedded columns are histories and will study we them by examining the whole of the iconography of the monument.

Each span is lit by a window with naked splayings and a door in semicircular arch makes communicate, in the south, the fourth span with outside.

Transept

The cross-section of the transept east delimits by four arcades of which extradossement is hollow by means of a small bay in the east, and of two similar bays on the others faces. the unit forms a powerful bracing reduces by cavities which not deteriorating any solidity. One finds the openwork cages under almost all the cupolas of the area, has Ennezat, has Saint-Genoa de Thiers, has Notre-Dame of the Port, has Issoire, has Artonne, has Orcival, has Saint-Saturnin, and has Glaine-Montaigut of which the cupola, one of oldest of Auvergne, appears to go back to the 11th century. But it should be said that similar system is found, exceptionally it is true, far from the province, as has Vignory (Haute-Marne), has Morienval (Oise), has Saint-Marcel-the-Sauzet (Drome), has Saint-Etienne of Nevers and has Saint Martin's day d' Ainay, has Lyon. Here, the arcades are assembled on square piles cantonnees of four semi-columns whose capitals are more finely carve than those of the nave or are covered scenes like those of the chorus. In the high part, an octogonal cupola rests on horns taking their origin above a stone punt or lintel poses horizontally, distinctive mark of the horns auvergnates. In the east, the cupola is lit by a small window.

The pilot wheels are divided in two spans:

  • The first forms the prolongation of the sides and is covered with a quadrant which comes to butt against the cupola and gives a powerful reinforcement has its solidity. L with still temoiguage of the concern of the architects auvergnats has there to balance the mass of construction.
  • The other span is voutee of a cradle in semicircular arch perpendicular to the axis and, perforates, in the wall of the bottom, of a window placee above three high blind arcades, that of the medium being tracee in mitre, decoration which we have relevee, in the same place, in several other churches of Auvergne.

A absidiole voutee in half dome and lit by a window opens on each arm of the transept.

Chorus

The roundabout makes continuation precedes by a span right and separate like him of the deambulatoire by arcades surhaussees and assembled on columns. Five high windows light its half dome. Around the deambulatoire is groined vault and gives birth has three radiating chapels in hemicycle between which windows were bored, which, like those of the chorus and as the three which light each vault, are cantonnees posts whose beautiful capitals are flowering ashes of sheets, heads, etc

Iconography of the capitals

One wanted to allot to the sculptures of several capitals of this church a direction symbolic system or allegorical and same to find it in the representation of extremely known topics. Thus Mr. the Rochias abbot, during a very conscientious study, however believed to see the Trinity in the three masks which furnish the basket with the capital of the column imbedded in front of the third span of the southernmost side, and the Sabbath in an ox which plays of the toothing-stone, beside a character overlapping a goat. We believe that it is necessary to be very reserve clans interpretation symbolic system of works of sculpture of the Middle Ages. If the artist sometimes wanted to make symbolism, it has it tent only by interpreting the precise text of a commentator, single author of the direction appears. It is in general in this text alone that exists symbolism. Often same the imagier did not include/understand it or same it has deforms it while being satisfied badly to copy interpretations already executees. The Saint-Nectaire cheese sculptor had designs much simpler and less original than one could believe it. Or it does not have carries out easy scenes has to identify or that our ignorance does not include/understand, it did nothing but reproduce known types characterizing certain religious topics. Still, undoubtedly, a-t-i1 reproduced, without seeking has to interpret them, of the reasons provided by the fabrics, the ivories or of the objects of goldsmithery; such are these birds face which decorate the capital of the column imbedded against the first septentrional span of the deambulatoire.

These capitals still carry the very apparent trace of old paintings perhaps going up at the origin, origin contemporary of the construction of the church, because certain details of costume as the helmets has nasal place from there the sculpture in the middle of the 12th century. It is finally advisable to notice that the various scenes representees, history religious or legendary, subjects borrow has traditional topics, are places without order and that one should not seek as a whole an allegorical cycle being held with method, as one has insinuates it.

Furniture

One sees on the wall gouttereau side northern, a Deposition of the 16th century, very mutilee, but bearing the-signature BRASSAC which is accompagnee of an edge, instrument of the stone mason. Brassac, which has sign this work, would be, according to 1 ' Forestier abbot, the author of the high altar breaks under the Revolution and of which one joined together the pieces to make 1 of them ' cupboard which contains the treasure of the eg1ise today. Can one trust has this assertion? Always it is that this cupboard carries an inscription of the 15th century, former, seems it, with the work of Brassac. One reads there:

The YEAR MILLET CCCCIIIXXVIII the 7 DAYS OF NOVEMBER WAS RAISED the GLORIOUS BODY DE HOLY MONSr NECTARY AT THE TIME ESTANT Sr ANTHOINE OF SAINT NECTERE WIRE HAS FIRE LORD ANTHOINE OF SAINT NECTERE AND OF LADY ANTHOINE OF JOINT MONTMORIN ESTANT MARRIAGE HAS LIVELY MARIE YOUNG LADY AND AT THE TIME ESTANT PRIOR BROTHER GUILLAUME FARMHOUSE WHICH MADE DILIGENCES OF SAID RAISING TO the POSTULATION OF the KNOWN AS LORD AND the PARISHIONERS.

An inventory of 1462, preserves at the files of the Haute-Loire, known as that i1 had there on the high altar a great hunting emaillee fifty-seven container relics. It disappeared under the Revolution. There remains actually treasure of the church only one bust reliquary, two plates of evangeliaires, a statue of the Virgin and an arm reliquary which are studied in a special article that Mr. the Marquis de Fayolle wants to devote well to goldsmithery auvergnate.

Outside

The frontage of the Saint-Nectaire cheese church is very simple: a door in semicircular arch opens in a fore-part an amount up to the level of the platforms, then high the pinion is perforated of a window and surmounts by a antefixe. Of each dimension a tower square cantonnee draws up buttresses and lit by only one row of windows geminees below the roof in house. Southern side rise is renforcee low blind arcades in which the windows of the sides are bored. Above, other small bays light the platforms, but they are open in blind arcades which would be only one modern addition. Opposite the fourth span a door in semicircular arch has its tympanum decorates with stones colorees and laid out in marquetry above a lintel in batiere. Under the roof the right shelf of a cornice reigns resting on modillons has chips separated by a nerve power station, modillons so common in Auvergne. Lastly, stone Crete deadens the angle of the roof. It is necessary to notice, on the modern sacristy placee of this dimension, an escutcheon pays and not identifies. The transept was very restores. Light by a window whose archivolt continues in cord to the buttresses of the angles, it ends in a pinion decorates of a made stone cross of various colors.

The bedside was established in the beautiful-ordinance of the bedside auvergnats. The absidioles supported by buttresses, columns without capitals and which leaves a vacuum between their top and the cornice, form, with the radiating chapels, a harmonious unit. Their windows are cerclees archivolts decorated with billets and which end in a cord. The roofs, places above similar cornices has those of the nave, but overflowing as of the ancient soffits not carve are covered with flat roofs stopped by projecting pinions above the chorus. This one emerges, similarly cap, but it is flowering ash, between the windows, of rectangular frameworks places under a rich person stringcourse of marquetry or materials colour appearing of stars and the rosettes. These rectangles form on the bedside a very special decorative unit has 1 ' Auvergne. The modern central bell-tower is drawn up above a drum barlong deadened by glacis and which contains the quadrants of the pilot wheels intend has to shoulder the cupola. It is necessary to note in various parts of this church of the stones of apparatus marquees of concise signs.
