Church, French Heritage monument to St symphorien sur coise

Saint-Symphorien-surCoise or Saint-Symphorien-le-Château (formerly Saint-Saphorin), rises amphitheatrically on the slopes of a rock peak, at the foot of which winds the Coise. It is a small town poorly built, streets narrow, winding, steep, dirty and poorly paved; but its location, surrounded by mountains ruffled of rocks and covered with wood, is very picturesque.

Saint-Symphorien has a quite beautiful hospice, surrounded by gardens. We note particularly, at the top of the rock that dominates the town, the Church, built on the site of another old church, whose Romanesque façade and Bell Tower remain. It consists of three vaulted naves, with ribs, and seven side chapels, cross in warhead and coloured stained glass. In the choir, under which is a crypt, is a beautiful mosaic. Outside, it is flanked by right and left, like all of the fortified churches, towers drilled loopholes and narrow Windows and grilled. Around the Church, which is mounted by several markets, there is a platform, from which the view extends over the plain of Forez, dotted with villages and castles. You can see West nice Clerimbert Castle, with its Park of walnut and chestnut trees; to the North West of Pluvy, elegant turrets; then in the distance between Pluvy and Clerimbert, Chazelles, which dominates the square bell tower Tower; and above, half hidden by trees, the village of Pomeys.

Saint-Symphorien owes its name and its foundation to his Church. Once surrounded by walls flanked by towers and pierced by three gates with machicolations, harrows and drawbridges, he possessed a castle, still seen on the ditches in the city. After having belonged to the counts of Forez, the town spent in 1173 the Church of Lyon. Trap a Royal castellany in 1332, taken and [in the 14th century by the major companies, and by the protestants in 1562, he declared himself first for the League, and not submitted to Henri IV and in 1594.

Today Saint-Symphorien is a large trade in cattle, and has two tanneries, muslin and linen factories; are exploited in addition with profit of stone quarries.
