Cathedral of Chambery
The Cathedral Church was built according to Grillet, around the year 1420. Besson said it was built with the proceeds of the alms collected by the Friars Minor of St. Francis, who occupied a convent in the neighborhood. He reports in this regard that noble Claude de Celeste, Squire of the Duke, and bourgeois Chambery, bequeathed them, by his will from July 9, 1506, one hundred ducats for the construction of the portal.
Its architecture perfectly recalls that time. It is responsible for sculptures that are a pretty nice effect; He was also decorated with a number of statues that were broken during the French revolution. The ship of the Church is beautiful, it is composed of three naves, the Centre is the highest.
Reads in Guichenon, vol. 1, p. 402, that "for its recreation and a public resiouyssance, it (Amé VI) ordered joustes and tournaments for three days, he did make the publication in estats voysins prompting nice men more skilful and courageous." The prince was the first of the supporters... Names weapons and currencies of these tenans were painted in the Church of the monks of St François de Chambéry, where they este veües nowadays in the order that they jousterent: but by whiten the church a few years ago this illustrious monument of antiquity was erased, and without care of the curious memory were lost este. The Amé County which appeared I first day of jouste firearms verdes, his horse caparassonne of verd and the livery of its verde people are acquired the nickname of verd and remarked by its wonderful address. »
The sanctuary of the Church was painted in 1810 by painters from Turin. It is regrettable that the mania of brush the interiors of the Churches made do, in recent years, on the ceiling of this Cathedral, paintings producing an optical effect, whereby its height is much diminished by the large number of their details and the too big burst of color.
It was much admired, it is not clear why two paintings in fresco, is said to be from the 14th century, and located behind the choir, representing one the Virgin and the child Jesus, and the other a Christ on the cross; because these two tables cannot have any other merit than seniority.
The pavement of the Church is sown tombs, some dating back, as seen with the inscriptions that adorn them, in the 15th century.
There was placed in 1824, in a marble Tomb next to the wall of a chapel on the right, the ashes of the jurisconsult Favre, that is removed from the place where they were buried in the former hospice from the incurable which was then a barracks. This tomb, topped badges belonging to the place occupied by the famous man whose remains are locked up, bears the following inscription:
It raised last year, in one of the chapels in left, a baptismal font made of white marble, a pretty nice job, but whose details, too multiplied do them rather resemble a miniature in a serious book.
This church has still a few stained glass windows painted, which were so general use at the time of its construction; She is parochial since 1777, and has a chapter of canons.
Erected in bishopric in 1779, she became the seat of an Archbishop in 1817.
