Saint-Martin Church (former), French Heritage monument to Soreze

It has been noted that in the canons of the ninth Council of Toulouse it is matter of some heretics who renewed the errors of the Manicheans and the Bulgarians. The first are known; the latter had been converted to the Catholic faith in the 9th century, and were allowed itself then infect Manes systems. It is certain that these heretics spread their dogma in Toulouse, at the beginning of the 12th century; they saw come with them, or after them, Tranchellin, Peter de Bruis, Arnaud de Bresse, Henry, the Waldensians, and later took the name of Albigeois. Their symbols were well variations or differences; they joined all at one point: the hatred against the Catholic religion brought up the fury.

Sorèze Abbey was surrendered, at that time, by the Viscount Bernard Atton, the Abbot and the monks of Moissac, to introduce the regular discipline of St. Benedict. This Lord named in this Act Cecile his wife and his children Roger and Raymond. The Charter carries the date of 1119. The following year, Piusa, Bishop of Toulouse, and Peter, Abbot of the monastery, who no doubt had succeeded Roger whereby the Charter of Bernard Aton was addressed, determined Pope Calixtus to Sorèze under the immediate authority of the Holy See. Calixte, who was then at Avignon, confirmed this Abbey in all his possessions. Several churches in its dependency are cited in the Act of the Pope, such as the place of Sorèze and the churches of Saint-Martin and Saint-Michel who were there, those of Saint-Vincent de Candels, of Saint-Martin de Puylaureris, of Saint-Anatole, Saint-Salvi, Saint-Saturnin from Villepinte, and a few others, as well as the monastery of Simorre.

Not content with placing Sorèze under the immediate authority of the Roman Pontiff, Piusa wanted, in 1120, give proof of his dedication to the Hospitallers of St. John: he gave them the Church of Saint-Rémi where they had already settled, but they were not even owners. This ancient Church belonged to the Bishop of Toulouse. He also helped Gerard, prior of the Hospital of Jerusalem, to acquire land both ecclesiastical that lay in his diocese. Piusa was brother of Raymond de Puy, Lord of highest consideration, and it is likely that it was relative to the second grand master of St. John, of the same name, who succeeded Gerard.
