Castle of Newfoundland, French Heritage monument to Fontenay le comte

This castle presents in the shape of two perpendicular wings flanquees of turns and watch towers.

These wings (one in the North-West and another in the North-East), are dotees of two stages and two levels of basement (one of them is vault).

The north-eastern wing is prolongee, in return, of a lower building flanks of a tower.

The north-western wing is prolongee of a building in ground floor.

As regards materials:

  • Freestone for the building in ground floor
  • Freestone still for the principal frontage and the watch towers of the north-western wing
  • Idem for the pinion and the watch towers of the north-eastern wing.
  • the remainder of construction is out of hardcore, often coated.
  • All the roofs are out of slate.
  • exception however for the commun runs which are tiled.

The access on the floors is done by a winding staircase out of frame, that with the basement by a right staircase in masonry.

Le château de Terre-Neuve a une particularité que peu de château en Vendée ont:

Logis renaissant du XVIe siècle construit pour Nicolas Rapin, Grand Prévôt de la Connétablie de France et ami d'Aggrippa d'Aubigné entre autres. Il échappe au vandalisme révolutionnaire et est remanié à l'époque du romantisme au XIXe siècle par Octave de Rochebrune. Ce dernier choisit de prélever des éléments sur d'autres monuments renaissants locaux ou non pour son château. Travaille d'antiquaire et de sauvegarde de ces éléments menacés dans leur emplacement d'origine de ruine comme la porte de la chapelle de Coulonges-sur-l'Autize. Les vantaux et les soleils rayonnant proviennent de Chambord, don fait à Rochebrune par son ami le comte de Chambord.
